Sumak Kawsay and Sustainable Finance: evidence on the role of indigenous cooperatives in Ecuador's financial system
Synopsis
Indigenous credit unions in Segment 1 in Ecuador represent a key manifestation of the solidarity economy in the face of financial exclusion. Using a mixed-methods approach and data from the SEPS, this study analyzes their financial performance—including profitability, delinquency, liquidity, efficiency, solvency, and coverage—in comparison with non-indigenous institutions. The study evaluates the role of these organizations in inclusive development and the realization of the principle of sumak kawsay.
