Synopsis

This chapter examines the cultural effervescence of the decade, marked by a shift from the momentum of the 1960s to a period of creative and critical retreat. It analyzes how the oil boom transformed urban lifestyles and strengthened the state’s presence in the arts, sparking debates about the “officialization” of culture. It highlights milestones such as *Between Marx and a Naked Woman*, the visual renewal of the VAN groups, and the consolidation of an essay that sought to diagnose national identity.

Author Biography

Francisco Proaño Arandi

Es novelista, cuentista y ensayista nacido en Cuenca en 1944. Participó en movimientos de vanguardia como el Grupo Tzántzicos y fue cofundador de la revista La bufanda del sol. Entre sus novelas destacan Antiguas caras en el espejo, Tratado del amor clandestino (finalista del Rómulo Gallegos en 2009 y Premio José María Arguedas en 2010) y Ceremonia de pólvora. Ha recibido en tres ocasiones el Premio Joaquín Gallegos Lara. Su obra narrativa incluye títulos como Historias de disecadores y Perfil inacabado. Fue viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores (2003) y diplomático ante diversos países y la OEA. Actualmente es académico de número y secretario de la Academia Ecuatoriana de la Lengua.
