The Ecuadorian Left Between the Cuban Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Synopsis
The triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 shattered paradigms within the Latin American left by demonstrating the viability of socialism in the region without geographical fatalism. Previously, doctrinal practice had been marked by the break between Ecuadorian socialism and the Third International in 1931, and by the communist split of the 1960s between pro-Moscow and Maoist factions. The Cuban process raised expectations for radical projects with their own distinct identities.
